James C. Carper, Ph.D.
is a professor in the Department of Educational Studies at the
University of South Carolina. In 1986-88 he served under Bill Bennett in
the US Department of Education, and in 1995-96 he served as the
Education Advisor for Governor David M. Beasley. Jim served as an
advisor to the SCAIHS Board from 1991-95 and in 1997 became a member of
the board. He also serves on
the Advisory Board of the National Home Education Research Institute.
Jim and his wife, Kathy, home schooled from 1986-2001 when their younger
daughter graduated with the SCAIHS Class of 2001. They have two
daughters.
William Mark Posey, Ph.D. (Secretary)
is a licensed school psychologist and an Associate Professor of Clinical
Pediatrics at
the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He also maintains a
private practice and has tested home-schooled students for over eight
years. It was because of his contact with these students and their
parents that Mark and his wife, Allaire, decided to home school. They
began in 2003 when the twins were in kindergarten. Three are now school
age—all enrolled in SCAIHS. Mark joined the Board in2005 and
currently serves as Secretary.
Raymond L. Sheen (Treasurer)
is President of the consulting firm, Product & Process Innovations, Inc.
He is a veteran business leader with over 20 years of engineering
management, quality management, and project management experience. Ray
and his wife, Holly, home schooled their two daughters from birth
through high school. Ray served on the statewide home schooling
organization boards of Connecticut (TEACH) and Iowa (NICHE) and joined
the SCAIHS Board in 2001. He currently serves as Treasurer. Ray
also serves on the Advisory Board of the National Home Education
Research Institute.
Joseph E. Tyler (Chairman)
graduated from USC with a Management Science major. Joe is a computer
consultant with T. M. Floyd Company and is an elder at Covenant
Presbyterian Church in Columbia. He is one of the founding board members
of SCAIHS serving continually since 1990 and is the Chairman.
He and his wife, Zan, have three children and home schooled from
1984-2005 when their youngest graduated with the SCAIHS Class of 2005.
Zan Peters Tyler
is the founder and former president of SCAIHS. She has worked tirelessly
for nearly two decades in both the judicial and legislative arenas in
South Carolina to effect positive change for home-schooling families.
Zan has served on numerous panels, committees, and boards in both the
public and private sectors, including the South Carolina Goals 2000
Panel and the Advisory Board for the National Center for Home Education.
Zan coauthored the book Anyone Can Homeschool and authored the
book 7 Tools for Cultivating Your Child’s Potential. Today,
besides being an author, Zan is

Educational Ministries.
William C. Wood, Jr. (Vice Chairman)
is an attorney with Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough Law Firm. Bill
and his wife, Tammy, joined SCAIHS in 1997 and their eldest of four
daughters graduated with honors with the SCAIHS Class of 2005. Their
second daughter is in high school, but the longevity of their home
school has been extended by the addition of their youngest two who were
born in 2002 and 2003. Both were adopted from China.
